5 Big Fluoride Questions and Answers

Close up of question marks on hand | preventative dentistry

If you are a health conscious person, which many people are who live in the Seattle area, you probably want to know why your dentist or doctor recommend certain treatments. We appreciate your interest in your oral health and are always here to give you evidence-based information, so you can make a choice that works well for you and your family.

Fluoride is a hot topic these days, and some patients are wondering if it is really necessary.

Here are 5 of the most common fluoride questions we hear from patients:

Are Fluoride Treatments Really Necessary?

We recommend preventive and restorative dentistry based on your needs, so there is never one answer for everyone. We recommend fluoride for kids, who have deep grooves in their teeth or who are prone to dental decay because of diet or genetics.

Each child is different, so we will discuss this option if the need arises. Click here for more information on children’s dentistry at Phinney Ridge Dental.

Is Fluoride Safe?

Small amounts of fluoride are safe for the prevention of decay and cavities. Many publications may try to deter patients who desperately need this treatment to avoid decay, but we like to refer people to the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry for the actual facts if they have concerns. You can also talk to Dr. Micah Bickel when you come in for your next appointment.

Fluoride is especially important for patients whose water municipality does not add enough fluoride to the drinking water to prevent dental caries (decay).

Can Adults Benefit from Fluoride?

As we age, our gums can sometimes recede, leaving exposed roots that may feel sensitive. We often recommend fluoride treatments near the gum line to prevent decay and reduce sensitivity. Adults with reduced dexterity due to arthritis can also benefit from this preventive treatment.

How Often Should Fluoride Treatments Occur?

We will recommend fluoride treatment frequency based on your specific needs.

How Does a Fluoride Treatment Work?

Unlike the old sour-tasting trays of fluoride gel, today’s fluoride is much easier to tolerate! We simply paint it on areas prone to decay and leave it there. You can still eat and drink, but it is a good idea to avoid crunchy foods for about four hours.
